Analysis of Singapores Pet Foods Market
X. Malaysian Pet Foods Market Analysis
Sales of dog and cat foods are the main driving force for market growth.
In 2003, the entire market of pet foods and nursing products still maintained a growth of 5%, with dog and cat foods dominating the market share. Since Malaysians gradually realize the importance of pet foods and plan to expend more on prepared pet foods to displace leftovers, the whole pet foods market sustained a steady growth during 1999 and 2004. Other reasons also contribute to the rapid growth, including living style transformation of Malaysian families, the acceptance for westerners way of keeping pets, the convenience of purchasing pet products in retail stores and the improvement of economic condition.
1.Dry dog foods and cat foods are compelling products.
Dry dog and cat foods are gaining more favor among people keeping pets and there are three reasons for that. Firstly, consumers believe dry foods are more sanitary and convenient for storage than wet foods. Secondly, if pets are fed with dry foods, their discharged feces are easier to clean up. To put it in another way, dry dog foods are more popular than wet dog foods because cats are cleaner than dogs. Finally, in the past, most people tended to feed pets with mixed wet pet foods. However, nowadays, more and more women have taken up their jobs, which means they have no time for cooking at home; additionally, it is still not popular for using mixers for dog and cat foods. Therefore, people gradually realize that feeding pets with dry pet foods are more convenient.
2.International corporations occupy the top position in sales of dog and cat foods.
International corporations like Mars and Nestles are still pioneers in Malaysian dog and cat foods industry. The above two corporations are capable of increasing their weight through influencing distribution networks and a large number of competitive products, such as Pedig-ree, Whiskas, Friskies and other brands. On the other hand, owing to long operating history and powerful sales network, local enterprises have become key market players in sales of other pet foods and nursing products. For example, KW Aquatic Supplies Corporation and A & P Aquarium Corporation are two leading enterprises in fish foods industry, while Perniagaan Yew Lai dominates the bird foods market.
3.Pet stores still play the dominant role.
Even though sales revenue of Malaysian pet foods and nursing products achieved by pet stores declined during 1999 and 2004, those stores were the most important distribution channels in 2003, covering more than half of total sales revenue. The reason was that sales of various nursing products, such as aquarium accessories for fish, birds, little mammals/ reptiles and pets were generally conducted in pet stores instead of supermarkets or hypermarkets. However, sales amount of dog and cat foods realized in pet stores is not as ideal as that in supermarket or hypermarkets, which have become the major distribution channels for dog and cat foods. Since masters of pets have now preferred to feed pets with prepared pet foods, pet foods with medium price receive the chief benefits. Moreover, products with competitive price are available in chain supermarkets and hypermarkets. Finally, one-stop shopping facilitates consumers greatly.
4.The trend of market forecast is clear.
The sales revenue of dog and cat foods is still the driving force for the development of the entire pet foods and nursing products market. Due to the enhancement of consumption consciousness, increasing concern on pets, stable economic and political conditions, continuous and gradual development of the country, masters of pets are expected to continue the purchase of prepared pet foods. In short term, the rapid development of various retail chain stores will facilitate peoples purchase of pet foods and nursing products. Whats more, those chain stores and supermarkets will maintain the price for pet foods within expected range.
XI. Analysis of Indonesias Pet Foods Market
XII.
